We’re often asked, “How does vaping affect Life Insurance? Is vaping classed as smoking?”

Until recently, if you used e-cigarettes or smoking control products, all insurers would class you as a smoker. This meant you'd pay more for your insurance even though you don't smoke!

If you're one of the 2.9 million vapers in the UK*, the good news is that Moneysworth can now help you find cheaper prices for Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover – even if you have certain existing health conditions.

“How much could vapers save?”

We can obtain prices for vapers that are up to nearly 50% cheaper than the best prices we can get for smokers! Typically, the cover prices for vapers are only slightly more than the prices for non-smokers.

“How does Moneysworth find fairer cover prices for vapers?”

We have recently sourced a UK insurance provider who is now offering cheaper Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover to non-smokers who use e-cigarettes and other nicotine vaping devices

This is because, unlike most life insurance products, the insurer doesn't class vape users as smokers, and therefore they don’t apply the higher monthly insurance premiums for smokers typically associated with Life Cover and Critical Illness Insurance.

“What if I don't smoke or vape but you use nicotine control products?”

Again, most insurers will class you as a smoker! But now there's good news for you too: we can also source lower monthly cover prices for people who use nicotine control products (such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum, nicotine sprays/inhalators, nicotine lozenges).

“I switched from smoking to vaping a long time ago. Will this help to lower my cover price?”

For Life Cover only, it depends on how many years ago you stopped smoking:

  • 5 or more years ago – you'll be eligible for the maximum reduction
  • 1-5 years ago – a significant reduction – much cheaper than if you were classed as a smoker
  • Less than 12 months ago – there's even a small reduction available if you've recently quit!

For Critical Illness Cover, it depends if you stopped smoking more than 12 months ago:

  • 12 months ago or more – you'll get non-smoker prices for your cover
  • Less than 12 months ago – you will be classed as a smoker (but you you can apply for non-smoker rates after 12 months of non-smoking)

Already got Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover? Think you're paying too much for it?

If you already have cover in place, it could be a good idea to talk to Moneysworth. It won't cost anything to find out, and we might be able to find you a better deal.

Did you know?

Perception vs. Reality…
Some people think that insurers don't usually pay out for life cover, critical illness and income protection claims.

However, in 2017
over 97%
of claims made were paid!
